Out of the wide world of career opportunities, Evan Bahs considers insurance one of the best kept secrets that more people should consider. Evan is Vice President of Sales at Acrisure Partner Insurance Advisors in Michigan. He views relationships, technology and an entrepreneurial spirit as keys to success. Acrisure’s Communications Manager Brittany Bellamy sat down with Evan to learn why.
Brittany: Did you always know you wanted to work in insurance?
Evan: I stumbled into the insurance industry. After graduating, I knew I wanted to be in a sales role but had no idea which industry, product or service. My grandma worked in insurance in the 1980s when the family farm faced financial hardship and she did very well, so I thought I’d try for myself.
I started as a Producer but worked simultaneously as a Commercial Account Executive so that I could learn Commercial Lines and see different sides of the agency.
Brittany: What is your favorite part of your job?
Evan: I love getting to meet different people from all walks of life, as well as the variety in my day-to-day work. There is nothing boring about insurance sales. You get to build relationships with different people all the time. The problem you are trying to solve is never the same. There is a thrill to winning business and a rewarding sense of accomplishment in providing peace of mind.
Brittany: How do you stay ahead of the competition?
Evan: Embracing new technology has given us advantages in a range of areas, but it all comes back to “working smarter,” which is crucial to stay at the forefront of the competition. New tech has given us the ability to meaningfully scale our business by enhancing productivity. We’ve also leveraged data to provide new insight into the changing composition of our agency’s book of business.
We can provide greater self-service capabilities to meet changing expectations. Adopting new technology naturally comes with a few bumps in the road, but the end result of delivering a better work experience to our team and a better service experience to our clients is worth it.
Brittany: What do you like most about working with Acrisure?
Evan: The openness to innovation and new ideas, whether they are coming from a 30 year industry veteran or someone relatively green like myself. Insurance Advisors was hugely supportive of my desire to innovate and take on a larger role, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity and experience it has given me in such a short period of time.
Brittany: Any advice for someone who is interested in a career in insurance?
Evan: Cast all the classic insurance and insurance agent stereotypes aside. Whatever you think you know about insurance from seeing the commercials on TV, forget about it.
If you value relationships and connecting with others, and have an entrepreneurial spirit, there is a tremendous amount of opportunity in insurance. It almost feels like one of the best kept secrets and it always surprises me that more people don’t consider it.
